What Is Plantar Fasciitis Embolization (PFE)?

Plantar Fasciitis Embolization is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedure that targets the root cause of your heel pain. By reducing excess blood flow to the inflamed area, embolization helps alleviate pain and promote healing without surgery or extended downtime.

FAQ: Plantar Fasciitis Embolization at Well&You

A minimally invasive treatment that has proven to be safe and highly effective.

A small catheter is inserted into a blood vessel in the ankle or thigh. Using imaging, our interventional radiologists guide the catheter to the blood vessels causing pain and inflammation. Tiny particles are then injected to block blood flow to the inflamed tissue, allowing it to heal naturally and reducing pain and discomfort.

PFE is ideal for individuals with chronic plantar fasciitis that has not responded to conservative treatments such as rest, physical therapy, medications, or orthotics. A consultation with one of our specialists can determine if PFE is right for you.

A small catheter will be inserted into a blood vessel in your ankle or thigh. Using imaging guidance, the doctor will direct the catheter to the blood vessels causing inflammation and inject tiny particles to block blood flow. The procedure is minimally invasive, and you’ll typically remain awake, with local anesthesia to numb the area.

The procedure itself is generally not painful, thanks to local anesthesia. You may feel slight pressure or discomfort during the catheter insertion. Post-procedure pain is minimal, and most patients describe it as manageable.

The procedure usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the patient’s specific needs.

Recovery time is short. Most patients can resume light activities within 24 to 48 hours and return to normal activities within a few days to a week.

As with any medical procedure, there are risks, though they are minimal with PFE. Potential risks include bruising, infection, or unintended blockage of nearby blood vessels. Your doctor will discuss these risks in detail.

PFE has shown high success rates in reducing pain and improving mobility in patients with chronic plantar fasciitis.

The doctor will provide specific instructions, but preparation may include avoiding food or drinks for a few hours before the procedure and stopping certain medications, such as blood thinners.

While PFE is highly effective, there is a small chance of recurrence. Maintaining good foot health and following your doctor’s advice can help reduce the risk.

Coverage for PFE varies by insurance provider. We do offer self-pay and payment plan options for insurance that doesn’t cover the procedure.
