Varicose Vein and Men an Ignored Medical Problem
Many people consider varicose veins to be a women’s health problem. Varicose veins, in particular, are seen as a cosmetic issue that primarily affects older women- this is a common misconception. Varicose veins can appear at any age and equally affect both men and women. Men frequently ignore the veins and do not think it is important to seek treatment, and they may suffer as a result.
Ignoring the Problem
Several research and health statistics show that men are more likely than women to ignore their health concerns. The lack of treatment for varicose veins is no exception to this behavior. Many men do not consider veins a health threat when there is no pain or obvious medical complications.
Because men’s veins are less visible, they can ignore their development more easily than women. In addition, men do not often wear clothing that exposes their legs as often as their female counterparts, and the hair on their legs may help conceal the discolored, bulging veins.
Men may not notice the sudden appearance of veins because they do not undergo pregnancies like women. In addition, varicose veins may not develop as early in life, making the growing problem easier for men to ignore. Many men may also avoid discussing this concern, even if it is bothering them, because they mistakenly believe varicose veins are a female condition.
Addressing the Cause
Although genetics have a role in developing varicose veins, lifestyle factors also contribute to the problem. Many men now work sedentary jobs. Forty years ago, approximately 20 percent of all jobs were light-duty work. By the year 2000, that number had doubled. Inactivity, overweight, and smoking all increase the risks of varicose veins. Unfortunately, men are often unwilling to change their lifestyle habits as they are to visit a doctor.
Understanding the Risks
Varicose veins do not go away on their own. The problem worsens over time and can lead to additional complications. The veins get larger and more painful. Legs and ankles could swell. Blood clots form, ulcers develop, and the skin becomes more sensitive, damaged, and bleeds more quickly, all of which increase the risk of infection.
Learning About Treatment
Many varicose vein treatment options are non-invasive and extremely safe. Lasers, injections, and other procedures with fast recovery periods are common options. Treatment requires little to no downtime, takes less than an hour, and leaves little to no scarring.
Changing the Trend
Any man who is self-conscious about his varicose veins should realize that he is not alone. Women are statistically more likely to seek help for the condition, although studies have shown that up to 50% of men may be silently suffering from it. Nevertheless, treatment is just as effective for men as it is for women, and the problem is something that patients and doctors can easily resolve in private.
