An enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition in men where the prostate gland grows in size. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. When the prostate enlarges, it can put pressure on the urethra, causing urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting or stopping urination, weak urine flow, or the feeling of not completely emptying the bladder. While enlarged prostates are not cancerous and do not increase the risk of prostate cancer, they can still cause pain and bothersome symptoms that may require treatment.
Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for fibroids that can be performed at our Jacksonville prostate center. During the procedure, a catheter is inserted into an artery in the groin or wrist and guided to the arteries that supply blood to the prostate gland. Once the catheter is in place, small particles or embolic agents are injected into these arteries to block or reduce blood flow to the prostate. By reducing blood flow to the prostate, PAE can shrink the size of the prostate gland and alleviate symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.
An alternative to open prostatectomy or transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a PAE is the only non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure in Jacksonville, performed by a trained prostate specialist, that gets you back to your life in a week (NOT months), fewer complications, and a lower risk of sexual side effects compared to surgery.
